Our Story

When it comes to getting started, its better late than never!

Although Siren arrived in October of 2012, which at this point in time was almost four months ago, I have finally created this blog in which everyone can hopefully enjoy and take part in our adventures. Until now I have been too busy to create this blog. Okay, I will be honest, I had absolutely no idea how to set up a blog until just recently.

How our Journey Began

August 22, 2012 was a typical day for me. I had just completed a rigorous week of Fair with two of my horses Atticus and Twister. So I guess you could say that I was resting and recovering from the excitement and stresses of the prior week. I was checking my email when I noticed an email which was titled "AQHYA Members Can Win a FREE Foal and Scholarships" sent to me by the AQHA. Of course, I answered this question with a "YES!". Seeing as how the paper work for the was due on the 24th, two days after I had received the email, I had to act quick to complete my paperwork and get it submitted in time. This work included:
  • A Waiver Form
  • An enrollment form where I answered questions that would ensure the AQHA that I was a suitable recipient
  • 200 word essay explaining why I would be a good recipient - the hardest part for me seeing as how I love to write and limiting me to 200 words was difficult.
I waited, and I waited, assuming that I would not be chosen because I did not believe that I could have so much luck! However, one night I was proved wrong when Brandon Black, the man in charge of the program, called my house to tell me the exciting news. That I was to receive a weanling from Raymond Sutton Ranch located in Gettysburg South Dakota, and just a short while later, she arrived to her new home! http://www.raymondsutton.net/

Continuing our journey

The goal of this program is "To give older AQHYA members who want to participate in a hands-on horse training opportunity that will teach the fundamentals of horsemanship." The recipients of the program (20 for 2012) are all vying for prizes and scholarships. I am able to gain knowledge and assert my current knowledge to an extremely rewarding project. In order to continue this adventure and try to receive these scholarships and prizes, I must:
  • Work on training Siren
  • complete a project book
  • write a monthly 1-3 page report on our progress
  • a 500 word paper on our first show experience
We are graded on these. The scores depict the winners.

Have fun following along in our adventures!
